This study addresses the central challenge of interpreting Khāqānī's Masnavī-yi al- ‘Aql wa al- ‘Ishq (Masnavi of Reason and Love) a text marked by semantic plurality, interwoven significations, and interpretive openness by uncovering the textual mechanisms that enable such hermeneutic expansiveness. Adopting a descriptive–analytical approach, the research pursues two primary objectives: to analyze the manifestations of semantic multiplicity and overlapping meanings and to reveal the textual strategies that generate this interpretive openness. To this end, it employs the tools of cognitive and symbolic criticism to deconstruct the poetic discourse and trace its symbolic representations. The findings indicate that the text does not present the reason–love relationship as a simple binary conflict but transforms it into a dynamic existential dialectic that produces alternative knowledge. This knowledge, in turn, reconfigures fundamental concepts such as understanding, presence and absence, thereby creating overlapping layers of interpretation. This effect is achieved through diverse textual mechanisms, including: the overarching reason–love binary, which sustains semantic tension; the interplay between sound and image, which enriches sensory perception; the use of multi-layered language that couples philosophical wisdom with mystical illumination; and the novel interpretation offered of the Hadith of the People of the Cloak (Ahl al-Kisā'), which adds spiritual and epistemological depth. The study concludes that the »Masnavī-yi al- ‘Aql wa al- ‘Ishq « (Masnavi of Reason and Love) constitutes a unique textual model that transcends traditional poetry through an organic synthesis of abstract intellectual inquiry and subjective mystical experience. Moreover, the text transforms the reader from a passive recipient into an active partner in the construction of meaning, driven by precisely those textual mechanisms that stimulate interpretation and open new horizons of understanding. Thus, this research contributes a methodological framework for reading mystical–philosophical texts and reveals the poetic text’s capacity to create multiple, intertwined worlds of knowledge.
